A letter from Edward J. Zabbia

Hi, my name is Edward J. Zabbia, call me Ed. I wanted to take a moment to let you know about me, my history, and why I think I'm the right CPA for you.

I always gravitated toward working on small and medium size businesses. Why? I enjoy working on many aspects of a client’s business as opposed to a niche. It gives me the ability to help them succeed, an opportunity to explore various aspects of their industry and most importantly, for me, a day that is constantly filled with new challenges.

I attended St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, New York. While attending classes it was always recommended that we complete a summer internship at a big 6 firm as it would look good on our resume. Two of my classmates completed such an internship. Of course, as classes resumed in the fall, we were all eager to hear how the internship went? What type of clients would they be exposed to? What office culture would they experience and most importantly, what work would they participate in?

Much to my surprise what was their response? They made photocopies, yes, all summer they made photocopies! How was making photocopies going to enhance their knowledge of accounting or assist them in getting noticed when they graduated? I was making photocopies at my summer job, and I was being PAID to do so.

This went on for the summers between my sophomore and junior years and again between junior and senior years and yes for both summers my classmates’ made photocopies. I believe one of them actually did prepare a bank reconciliation at the end of their second internship, but we had already completed bank reconciliations in accounting 100.

My first job in public accounting was at a four-partner firm. A good friend had helped me set up the interview and appearing with his recommendation I was able to secure the position. The best thing about it was the firm had all types of clients. Of course, I started on the smaller businesses and assisted the senior accountants and partners on the larger clients. I liked preparing the various governmental filings, in addition to performing the bookkeeping and financial statements. Most importantly I was able to interact directly with the business owners as well as my supervisors. In essence I had two jobs. I worked for both the firm and the client. I was training in the office on how to be a CPA but also participating in advising clients with respect to business decisions. I believe I learned more in my time at that firm about the real world than I did earning my accounting degree in college.

When the partners decided to make a change, I left the firm to work for the partner who helped me the most and allowed me to do what I enjoyed, work on small businesses. When I left his firm, I felt ready to begin the next phase of my career.

It was April 2002 when I joined Raskin & Raskin, CPA’s PC and began working on most of the clients that we still provide services to today. Twenty years later the firm specializes in small and medium sized businesses in all fields, specializing in professional, technical and real estate. We have partnered with one of the largest referral sources which allows us to refer highly technical issues to a professional who can provide guidance as needed. Are you looking for a small firm that can guide you through the issues of today and assist you as you grow? Send us an email and let us get started helping you succeed.
